I was having some strange creaking and the shifters would lean hard when under load. Especially when wheeling.
When I removed the passenger side mount, I could see that the rubber was cracking away from the steel. The drivers side was completely in two when I pulled it out. As I was cleaning up the frame mounts (where the two 14 mm headed bolts were) I noticed cracks in all four. They were 80-95% cracked off. I welded some larger grade 8 washers to fix the cracks (the welding sucked due to the lack of access).
This is concerning. It would explain why my rig kept shifting gears when I was trying to get out of Mickey’s hot tub. I also have a metallic squeak that I haven’t been able to find. Maybe this is the source for that problem as well.
Unfortunately the only real way to check the mounts is to remove them. If you remover the rubber flaps in the inner fender wells, you could see the frame mounts. A little cleanup and you should be able to see if they are cracked. The bolts may cover most of the crack. That is why I didn’t notice them until the mount bolts were out.
